Began in April of 1985.
Because we began by dealing with "developing world" technologies and our projects have taken an average of 8 years, (quickest was 2 weeks and the slowest is 20 years and counting) it becomes difficult to access the normal investment market that expects a 3-5 year payback. As a result we have functioned as a non-profit foundation and have recieved over 6 million dollars USD of contributions for this work in some 20 yrs of our efforts.

We have been strictly a research and design studio. We thought that if we could just design and release, the world would gather up these new options and commercialize them while we continued to do research and product design. We didn't want to risk losing the "right-brained creation mode" to a more "left-brained business mode". We eventually came to realize that we needed to turn the little studio into a business capable of dealing with the volume and complexity that the public responses require.

As a solution, We have partitioned IDS into three parts ....
